Qingming Festival: A Chinese Traditional Festival of Remembrance and Renewal

2026-04-04 Hits: 121

Origin & Historical Background

With a history of over 2,500 years dating back to the Zhou Dynasty, Qingming evolved from ancient ancestor worship rituals. It merged with the Cold Food Festival and Shangsi Festival over time, and became a national festival in the Tang Dynasty. It was included in China’s first batch of national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

When is Qingming Festival?

As the 5th of China’s 24 solar terms, Qingming usually falls on April 4th, 5th or 6th in the Gregorian calendar, around 15 days after the Spring Equinox. Its exact date varies slightly each year.

Traditional Customs

Qingming centers on two themes: remembering ancestors and enjoying spring. Here are its representative customs:
  • Tomb-Sweeping & Ancestor Worship: People clean ancestors’ tombs, place offerings and express respect. Now, more people choose civilized ways like offering flowers instead of burning joss paper.
  • Spring Outing: Known as "Taqing", people go out to enjoy the revival of spring, embodying the wisdom of harmony between humans and nature.
  • Flying Kites: A popular outdoor activity; ancient people used it to pray for good luck, while now it’s a joyful family activity.
  • Inserting & Wearing Willow Branches: Willows symbolize vitality; people insert them at homes or wear them to pray for blessings.
